Waterfronts are increasingly developed as engines of urban growth in Nordic cities, yet the rising housing costs associated with these projects challenge longstanding ideals of socio-spatial equality. Simultaneously, they are often legitimized through new visions of social inclusion, embodied in high-quality public spaces. We examine public hotspots in two recently developed waterfront neighbourhoods, Ranta-Tampella in Tampere and Nordhavn in Copenhagen, and explore how these areas might be reimagined through a generative AI tool from the perspectives of students and residents.

Salla Jokela (University Lecturer), Mikko Kyrönviita (Researcher) and Markus Laine (University Lecturer) are based at Tampere University, Finland, and are visiting the MOSPUS research group at RUC during the autumn semester of 2026. They are part of a team that is studying ‘Contested waterfront transformation’, a project funded by the Research Council of Finland (Suomen Akatemia) that is addressing how social inclusion is realized within the financialized urban growth machine through six cases from Finland, the Nordic countries and other parts of Europe.
