Pandemiology Watch (August 12-18, 2026)
Ebola
According to the INRB-UMIE BDBV on August 18, 2026, Epidemic Dashboard, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 4,566 confirmed cases and 2,128 confirmed deaths. Health authorities are also investigating 270 suspected cases and 91 suspected deaths.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) on August 14, 2026, the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is now the largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country. WHO says the outbreak is spreading rapidly, driven by insecurity, population displacement and mobility, as well as cross-border movements. The organization says attacks on health facilities are limiting access for response teams, discouraging people from seeking healthcare, disrupting surveillance and response activities, and increasing the risk of undetected transmission. WHO, national authorities, and international partners are expanding treatment centres, strengthening surveillance, increasing contact tracing, and working closely with communities to control the outbreak and prevent further spread.
Measles
US
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on August 17, 2026, declining childhood vaccination rates in the United States are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks.
