Emerging outbreaks

According to CIDRAP on February 2, 2026, researchers in Bangladesh have found an emerging bat‑borne virus called Pteropine orthoreovirus (PRV) in stored throat swab samples from five patients who were initially suspected of having Nipah virus infection. All five had symptoms similar to Nipah virus infection and had recently drunk raw date‑palm sap which is a known route for bat virus transmission. They all tested negative for Nipah virus in standard tests, leading scientists to use advanced genetic sequencing to detect PRV instead. This suggests that other bat‑borne viruses may be circulating undetected in humans, highlighting the need for increased surveillance and testing in the region.
