New connections and new gathering places
Roskilde University is developing new teaching and working environments on campus to provide a framework for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative teaching methods. Therefore, a large part of the existing buildings from the 1970s in the central part of the campus – also known as the Pergola – is being transformed and completely renovated.
The new attractive buildings will contribute to a good and active study environment, encouraging students to spend time on campus.
About the construction work
The project involves the complete renovation of five existing buildings, two new mezzanine buildings and three new walkways, as well as some minor remodelling in adjacent buildings. The landscape project includes reworking and renovating the outdoor areas adjacent to the buildings.

Functional renewal
Roskilde University wants to create an open and attractive campus with strong connections between outdoor and indoor areas, as well as new spaces with varied, open and attractive study and research environments. New connections and new gathering places are being created in order to support this objective. New connections are being created between buildings, as well as open and accessible environments, new larger spaces and connections between buildings and outdoor areas/landscapes.
Buildings 04 and 06 will be connected by a new large mezzanine building and connected to building 05 by a new walkway on the first floor. In this way, the 3 buildings will be joined. Buildings 08 and 10 will similarly be connected with a new, slightly smaller mezzanine building to the north, allowing for a new unifying outdoor space and plaza. The new mezzanine building will also be connected to building 09 with a new walkway to create cohesion.
Coherence and openness
The new mezzanine buildings are designed with open environments adjacent to the more closed existing teaching buildings. The mezzanines will be the new indoor gathering spaces for academic and social interaction and will facilitate a wide range of informal and formal activities in the spirit of Roskilde University.
The old buildings will be completely renovated and opened up with glass walls towards the corridors. The corridors will be broken up in strategic places, with open areas for more informal and social gatherings. There will also be spaces for project and group work. The façades will be opened up towards the campus and the new garden environments. Outward-facing features such as cafés and gathering spaces will become directly accessible and visible.
