PhD programme Health and Society
About the programme
The PhD programme Health and Society is part of the Graduate School of People and Technology at Roskilde University. The programme provides a framework for health research rooted within and across the social sciences, humanities and health sciences.
The research programme aims to train researchers who carry out research projects that contribute to research and practice, based on current health-related issues. The research in the programme includes clinical intervention studies as well as research of how disease and health affect and are affected by societal and cultural conditions, technologies, institutions and forms of knowledge.
The programme offers an interdisciplinary research environment focused on exploring, theorising and supporting sustainable development of a diversity of practices related to health and illness, which we approach as an object of human, professional, technological and institutional activities.
We have supervisors with expertise and research experience in many areas, of which the following can be highlighted as areas of strength:
- Welfare state and health policy
- Social inequality and marginalisation in health
- Professions, learning and collaboration in healthcare
- Nursing and care work
- Health technology and digitalisation
- Patient and user roles
- Mental health
- Chronic and multiple illnesses
- Reproductive health and family building-
- Ageing and elderly care
Research approaches
The research in the programme is characterised by the combination of empirically grounding and strong theoretical ambition. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods are used, such as ethnography, discourse and policy analysis, narrative and biographical, participatory, epidemiological and statistical approaches. We are a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment and we invite new theoretical and methodological approaches, e.g those utilizing digital technologies.
PhD environment in the programme
As a PhD scholar, you will be part of a vibrant research environment with researchers at all levels. We expect you to actively contribute to the research environment by participating in activities and contributing with your knowledge and perspectives. We strive to create well-being and a good working environment for PhD scholars, as we know from experience and research that this is central to completion and quality, and to the individual learning process of becoming a researcher.
You will, as your main supervisor, be affiliated with the Health and Society research group. The group allocates teachers to two Master's programmes (in Danish); the Master's Programme in Nursing (Can.Cur) and Critical Health Studies (Can.San) These programmes provide excellent opportunities to develop your teaching and communication qualifications.
The Graduate School of People and Technology offers a range of PhD courses that will support your scholarly delevopment and the PhD programme Health and Society offers high level introductions to leading edge theories and methodologies in interdisciplinary health research. You will be provided the opportunity to propose and plan course activities together with PhD colleagues and senior researchers.
We offer a vibrant and open research environment, and we expect you to contribute actively, e.g. by establishing networks locally, in other research environments, nationally as well as internationally. Your main supervisor will support you in planning a stay at another research institution relevant to your project, considering your life situation and family circumstances.
