Emerging outbreaks

Hantavirus

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 28, 2026, the Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius has reached 13 cases, including three deaths. Eleven cases have been confirmed, while two others are under investigation as probable infections. More than 600 contacts are being monitored across 32 countries. WHO said international contact tracing and public health investigations are ongoing, while the overall global risk remains low. 

Ebola

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on June 2, 2026, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo had reached 344 confirmed cases and 60 deaths, while Uganda reported 15 confirmed cases and one death. CDC said 116 suspected cases remained under investigation in the DRC 

 

Measles

Bangladesh

According to CIDRAP on June 1, 2026, Bangladesh reported more than 1,300 suspected measles cases and two deaths in a single day. The outbreak has now reached nearly 71,000 infections and 585 deaths since mid-March, with children under 5 accounting for most cases and deaths. Health officials say low vaccination coverage is contributing to the spread of the disease.  

US

As of May 29, 2026, the United States has reported 1,983 measles cases so far in 2026, according to the Center for Disease Control. In 2026, the age group 5-19 accounts for 51% of the cases (1,006), and children under 5 years account for 21% of the cases (417). Of the cases reported in 2026, 92% were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status and 6% of the cases have been hospitalized (124). A total of 4,271 measles cases and three deaths have been reported to date. 

According to CIDRAP on June 2, 2026, Florida has reported 154 measles cases, making it the fourth-most affected U.S. state this year and marking its highest annual case count in 25 years.  

Canada

As of June 1, 2026, Canada has reported 1,052 measles cases in 2026, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. In 2026, 60% of the cases occurred in children (631). Manitoba accounts for 62% of the cases (657), and Alberta accounts for 29% of the cases (305) reported so far in 2026. 87% of the cases reported in 2026 were unvaccinated (913), and 6% required hospitalization. A total of 6,477 measles cases and two deaths have been reported to date.

 

Influenza

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on May 29, 2026, 174 pediatric influenza deaths have been reported in the United States during the 2025-2026 flu season. In the latest weekly influenza surveillance report, two additional child deaths linked to influenza were reported. 85% of the children who died were not fully vaccinated against influenza. 

H5N1

As of May 5, 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 71 confirmed human cases and two deaths. 

 

Mpox

From May 25-June 2, 2026, there have been no significant updates on mpox outbreaks worldwide.
