Emerging outbreaks
Hantavirus
According to the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on June 3, 2026, one person in home quarantine following potential exposure to Andes virus will undergo more frequent testing after an initial test showed a weak positive result. Additional tests have all been negative, and the individual remains symptom-free. RIVM said there is no evidence of an active infection and the person is not considered a case or a transmission risk.
Ebola
According to the INRB-UMIE BDBV 2026 Epidemic Dashboard on June 9, 2026, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 635 confirmed cases and 127 confirmed deaths. Health authorities are also investigating 119 suspected cases and 242 suspected deaths.
Measles
Bangladesh
According to BEACON on June 5, 2026, Bangladesh's measles outbreak has reached 75,708 suspected cases, 9,260 confirmed cases, and 605 deaths since mid-March. Dhaka Division remains the epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 35,508 suspected cases, 6,480 confirmed cases, and 265 deaths.
US
As of June 5, 2026, the United States has reported 2,030 measles cases so far in 2026, according to the Center for Disease Control. In 2026, the age group 5-19 accounts for 51% of the cases (1,029), and children under 5 years account for 21% of the cases (424). Of the cases reported in 2026, 92% were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status and 6% of the cases have been hospitalized (127). A total of 4,318 measles cases and three deaths have been reported to date.
Canada
As of June 1, 2026, Canada has reported 1,063 measles cases in 2026, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. In 2026, 60% of the cases occurred in children (640). Manitoba accounts for 62% of the cases (664), and Alberta accounts for 29% of the cases (309) reported so far in 2026. 87% of the cases reported in 2026 were unvaccinated (920), and 6% required hospitalization. A total of 6,477 measles cases and two deaths have been reported to date.
Influenza
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on June 5, 2026, 179 pediatric influenza deaths have been reported in the United States during the 2025-2026 flu season. In the latest weekly influenza surveillance report, five additional child deaths linked to influenza were reported.
H5N1
As of June 9, 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 71 confirmed human cases and two deaths.
Mpox
From May June 3-9, 2026, there have been no significant updates on mpox outbreaks worldwide.
