Emerging outbreaks

Hantavirus

According to the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on June 18, 2026, almost all passengers and crew of the cruise ship MV Hondius have ended their 42-day quarantine following an Andes virus outbreak. All individuals tested negative before release and are not considered a transmission risk. One person remains in quarantine as a precaution due to close contact with a confirmed case. The outbreak, which began in early May, resulted in 13 infections and three deaths.

Ebola

According to the INRB-UMIE BDBV Epidemic Dashboard on June 22, 2026, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 1,094 confirmed cases and 277 confirmed deaths. Health authorities are also investigating 131 suspected cases and 44 suspected deaths. 

 

Measles

US

As of June 18, 2026, the United States has reported 2,104 measles cases so far in 2026, according to the Center for Disease Control. In 2026, the age group 5-19 accounts for 51% of the cases (1,068), and children under 5 years account for 21% of the cases (432). Of the cases reported in 2026, 93% were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status and 6% of the cases have been hospitalized (131). A total of 4,392 measles cases and three deaths have been reported to date. 

According to PBS News on June 20, 2026, Utah has been battling an ongoing measles outbreak for over a year, with more than 680 reported cases since June 2025. The spread has been hard to control and mainly affecting communities with low vaccination rates. Although transmission has slowed in recent weeks, health officials warn the outbreak is ongoing and could worsen again, especially with the upcoming school season.

Canada

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada on June 22, 2026, Canada has reported 1,073 measles cases (992 confirmed and 81 probable) in 2026 as of June 13. 60% of the cases occurred in children (645). Manitoba accounts for 62% of the cases (668), and Alberta accounts for 29% of the cases (311) reported so far in 2026. 86% of the cases reported in 2026 were unvaccinated (926), and 6% required hospitalization. A total of 6,498 measles cases and two deaths have been reported to date.

 

Influenza

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on June 5, 2026, 182 pediatric influenza deaths have been reported in the United States during the 2025-2026 flu season. In the latest weekly influenza surveillance report, three additional child deaths linked to influenza were reported. 

H5N1

According to the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) on June 18, 2026, recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture show an increase in H5N1 avian influenza among dairy cattle in Idaho, with 33 cattle affected in the past 30 days. [bing.com]

So far in 2026, 54 cases have been reported in cattle nationwide, which is significantly lower than in previous years. Utah has also reported three cattle infections this month

As of June 23, 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 71 confirmed human cases and two deaths. 

 

Mpox

From May June 17-23, 2026, there have been no significant updates on mpox outbreaks worldwide.
