Emerging outbreaks

Hantavirus

According to the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), no new updates were reported between June 10 and June 16, 2026, regarding the person in home quarantine following potential exposure to Andes virus.

Ebola

According to the INRB-UMIE BDBV on June 15, 2026, Epidemic Dashboard, the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 837 confirmed cases and 196 confirmed deaths. Health authorities are also investigating 235 suspected cases and 54 suspected deaths.

According to Reuters on June 12, 2026, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to a large displacement camp, where a mother and her daughter died after contracting the virus. The camp hosts around 30,000 internally displaced people, raising concerns about rapid transmission in overcrowded conditions.

Measles

EU

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Measles and Rubella Monthly Report published on 27 May 2026, a total of 3,779 measles cases were reported in the EU between May 2025 and April 2026, the majority of which were laboratory-confirmed. During the same period, three deaths were recorded in France and the Netherland

In April 2026 alone, 451 cases were reported across 17 countries, while 12 countries reported no cases. The number of cases increased compared to the previous month. The highest numbers of cases were observed in Bulgaria, Italy, Latvia, France, and Spain. Across the EU, Romania accounted for the highest number of cases, with 1,354 (cases), representing approximately 36% of all reported cases, followed by Italy (594 cases), France (421 cases), Spain (296 cases), and Belgium (236 cases).

Most cases were due to local transmission. Approximately 60% of infections were acquired within the reporting country, with only a minority being imported or linked to imported cases. Children under five years accounted for 1,267 cases (33.5%), while individuals aged 15 years and older accounted for 1,655 cases (43.8%). Approximately 78% of reported cases occurred in unvaccinated individuals, while 12.1% had received one dose and 8.7% had received two or more doses of the vaccine.

Measles outbreaks in the EU are primarily driven by insufficient vaccination coverage, resulting in immunity gaps within the population. The high proportion of unvaccinated individuals and the predominance of local transmission indicate that the virus continues to circulate in susceptible groups, particularly in populations with limited access to vaccination or lower vaccine uptake.

US

As of June 12, 2026, the United States has reported 2,073 measles cases so far in 2026, according to the Center for Disease Control. In 2026, the age group 5-19 accounts for 51% of the cases (1,050), and children under 5 years account for 21% of the cases (428). Of the cases reported in 2026, 92% were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status and 6% of the cases have been hospitalized (128). A total of 4,361 measles cases and three deaths have been reported to date.

According to CIDRAP on June 12, 2026, measles cases continue to increase in the United States. Virginia has become a key hotspot, reporting 111 cases, most linked to an outbreak in Buckingham County. Other states are also affected, including Pennsylvania (65 cases), South Carolina (670 cases), Utah (490 cases), Texas (182 cases), and Florida (141 cases).

Canada

As of June 15, 2026, Canada has reported 1,071 measles cases in 2026, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. In 2026, 60% of the cases occurred in children (645). Manitoba accounts for 62% of the cases (668), and Alberta accounts for 29% of the cases (310) reported so far in 2026. 87% of the cases reported in 2026 were unvaccinated (927), and 6% required hospitalization. A total of 6,496 measles cases and two deaths have been reported to date.

H9N2

The case involves a two-year-old boy in stable condition, with no symptoms reported among close contacts. The virus shows no evidence of human-to-human transmission, and infection is believed to have occurred via contact with a contaminated surface in a live poultry market.

H5N1

As of June 16, 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported any cases of person-to-person transmission of H5N1 in the United States. The total remains at 71 confirmed human cases and two deaths.
