Debating Populism
Political actors around the globe, from Tahrir Square to Trump Tower, claim to speak for the people against the political elite. Meanwhile politicians and researchers warn us that populism may pose a fundamental threat to democracy. But what is the relationship between the people, populism and democracy? How do we best understand and deal with populism? This and other related questions will be debated by a panel consisting of:
Rune Lykkeberg: Chief editor of the Danish newspaper Information and author of (2008) Kampen om sandhederne ('The Struggle over the Truths') and (2019) Vesten mod vesten ('The West against the West') amongst other books.
Mogens Herman Hansen: Professor emeritus at the Saxo Institute, Copenhagen University and author of (2010) Demokrati som styreform og som ideologi ('Democracy as a form of Government and as Ideology') and (2017) Hvordan forvrænger populismen demokratiet? ('How Populism Corrupts Democracy') amongst other books.
Ditte Maria Brasso Sørensen: Ph.d. and special advisor. Completed a thesis on the EU, democracy and populism at the Department of Political Science, Copenhagen University.
Allan Dreyer Hansen: Associate professor at Roskilde University and primary investigator on the research project ”In the Name of the People.”
The event is free and takes place on the January 30, 13:15-14:45 in the large auditorium in building 25 (25.2-035), Roskilde University.
Note that the debate will be in Danish.
